Vicuñas – also known as small camels – live in the South American Andes at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters. There, they grow a coat that withstands the extremely cold climate and has a fineness unmatched by any other animal. The global population is estimated at only around 270,000 animals – since only the fine undercoat is used, the “harvest” is very limited, making vicuña wool one of the rarest and most precious noble fibers in the world.
